Phaplu Trek to the Everest Base Camp (EBC) is one of the most amazing journeys which enables you to experience the Solu and Khumbu regions, a combination of Sherpa culture, Himalayan sceneries, and restraining altitude gain. It is not the usual EBC trek route, which begins with a flight to Lukla, but this journey takes off from a beautiful drive to Phaplu. On your way you traverse the local village areas and deep forests nearby, reaching how Everest, the world's highest peak, lies at its base with an altitude of 8,848m.
To explore the Everest Base Camp via Phaplu in the spring season (March-May) or the fall season (September-November) is the best time because these seasons are less challenging than the rest.
The spring time of the year is one of the most beautiful periods in the trek to the Everest region. The temperature is calm and stable with 10°C to 15°C at low altitudes and -5°C to -10°C hours during the day and night. The sky is clear and the fascinating shots of the towering peaks such as Sagarmatha, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam will please your eyes. Spring is also the main expedition season, so trekkers can witness climbers preparing for their Everest summit attempt at Base Camp.
In addition to the spring, travellers can also set their journey in a beautiful autumn. From the middle of September to the end of November, the atmosphere is usually breezy and the view is clear, which makes these periods the best for doing the hike. The rainy season usually cleans the air and the landscapes, thus fresh and green are left. The temperatures are almost the same as in spring, but the nights might be colder, specifically in high altitudes. The festive atmosphere in Nepal during Dashain and Tihar (Nepali festivals) also adds a cultural charm to the experience.
Physical and mental strength is necessary for adventure trekking between Phaplu and Everest Base Camp, where the difficulty level ranges from moderate to challenging for experienced trekkers. Travelers experience lengthy trekking distances that exceed 10 to 15 kilometers on each day while taking between 5 to 8 hours to complete them.
First-time trekkers venturing into high-altitude territory should choose this path because its slower elevation gains throughout each day. Moving forward, you need to hydrate with water and maintain a controlled walking speed.
The trek to the Everest Base Camp through Phaplu is different and a rewarding experience. Unlike the typical route via Lukla, the Phaplu route is more enjoyable. The foreign tourists will then see the Song Gompa and will hike through Soyambu to the Sherpa villages.
The reason for the preference of this route is the multi-cultural and anti-tourist experience. After the fabulous beginning in the Solu region with the villages of Rai, Magar, and Sherpa the hiker will enter the Khumbu region. The trail to Phaplu is quiet and green, providing tourists a chance to unite with the Himalayan people in a scenic setting. When it comes to the Everest Base Camp Trek via Phaplu, adventure seekers, nature lovers, and those who fancy to get to the base camp slowly, in a picturesque and culturally rich way are sure to have a fulfilling journey.

An early morning ride to Phaplu will take you through a very picturesque setting, passing by terraced fields, rivers & remote villages. The trek initiates with the sight of Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Gaurishankar towering over the hills. An 8 to 9 hour drive will take you to the starting point of the trek, Phaplu, which is in the Solu region, to rest for the night.
On day three, the trek begins with a pleasant ascent through pine trees and farmlands. And in a little while, you will get to the Ringmo village which is famous for its apple orchards. Then slowly move towards the Dudh Koshi River. You will climb up the suspension bridge to reach the last stop, Nunthala, a beautiful Sherpa and Rai village where you can have a restful, cozy night.
And the day after that, you will go down, first reaching the Dudh Koshi River and then crossing the suspension bridge to enter Jubing, an old traditional Rai village. Then, going further, you will see the forest and terraced fields, which you will pass before you get to Bupsa village, a small hidden town in the mountains.
The way goes on through rhododendron forests, then in Surke, where the trail from Jiri and the trail from Lukla join to form the Everest trail. Beyond Surke, the winding dirt path interjects small villages before ending at Phakding, a tourism gateway renowned for its natural beauty, whose main street follows the river.
You’ll have breakfast and hike next to the Dudh Koshi River. Here you can cross the many bridges that let you walk from one hill to another one. You could pass by Monjo after having permits for the park. Your tickets will be cross-checked and the border is the point from where you will go up. The way to Namche Bazaar commences with a slope, leading you up to the town, a business and social center which is widely known in Khumbu.
Your acclimatization to higher altitude can be improved by dedicating a day to roam Namche. The trails that lead to Everest View Hotel allow visitors to see breathtaking vistas of Everest and Lhotse and Ama Dablam. The path beyond Namche offers spectacular vistas which feature Everest along with Ama Dablam and Thamserku peaks. The route leads you from the Dudh Koshi River descent into a rhododendrons and pine forest before you reach Tengboche, which holds the title of the biggest Buddhist monastery in that area.
Starting from Debuche, the path leads down to a river bridge followed by the passage through beautiful Pangboche village which offers spectacular mountain vistas. Your journey progresses through diminishing greenery while presenting increasingly rough landscapes. Your stay in Dingboche will extend through one nighttime period.
An upward trail through Dughla Pass guides you to a place where there is a memorial dedicated to the people who lost their lives while climbing Everest. The main path then goes alongside a glacial pathway until you reach Lobuche.
Today is the most interesting day when you finally get to the Everest Base Camp. On your way there will be rocky moraines and glaciers, and you will still enjoy the views. And you will feel so proud to take a photo of the amazing mountain before you can come back to Gorakshep for the evening.
It is at the early hours of the day, you will go hiking and be at Kala Patthar for the sunrise view over the top of Everest and its neighbor mountain peaks. The natural beauty is spectacular enough, so you need to see Pheriche for the night.
As you walk downhill from Pheriche, you will come across Pangboche, which is a village in the Khumbu valley. The first monastery you will come across that will welcome you will be the Tengboche monastery. The trails move through the greenery and the small settlements before the Namche Bazaar welcomes you. You are just there to relax and have something when having a meal before going back to Kathmandu.
The final day takes you through steep trails found within Sagarmatha National Park. You will cross the Dudh Koshi River on its suspension bridges as you move down while having the opportunity to experience the environment firsthand.
Fly over the beautiful and short path of Manthali or Kathmandu through wonderful views of the Himalayas, and come back after the air tour. Enjoy the remainder of the day to yourself and chill or take a sightseeing tour around Kathmandu.
Your Everest adventure concludes as you are transferred to the airport for your departure, carrying unforgettable memories of the trek.
