Picture a land of rough beauty, where old caves are dug into tall cliffs, and life feels straight out of the past. This is Upper Mustang, a faraway part of Nepal that used to be its kingdom. Walking here is special; it's not like typical tourist spots. This article is your helper for a 13-day trip to Mustang.
We'll chat about the path, places to stay, what stuff to bring, and how to be kind to the local people. Get ready to be amazed by the pretty and puzzling charm of this amazing place. This is an adventure unlike any other, leading the participant to land and an environment that seems frozen in time. You'll be stepping into a world that is both very ancient and incredibly alive.
But let's break it down, the preparations you need to heat up before heading to Upper Mustang for trekking. It is not just grabbing hiking boots and walking off; this kind of travel may be dangerous.
Understand immediately that Upper Mustang is not your usual hiking destination. It's a restricted area; in other words, you can't just wander in. You must get special permits. Don’t stress; you don’t have to sift it out all alone. You will follow a local trekking agency located in Nepal; they are efficient and they will do the paperwork for you much more quickly. Think of them as your travel assistants for this particular journey.
Another crucial step is to hire a guide and a porter. A guide, who must be licensed, will be your companion and expert on the trail. Upper Mustang is known for being out of the way, with very few signs to show you the way. A guide will keep you from getting lost.
Plus, they'll fill you in on the local culture, helping you understand the area and its people. The porter is someone who will help carry your big bag, making your walk less tiring. This is a great support as you will be walking for several hours each day.

The first day is for settling in. Unpack and make yourself at home. Take some time to check out the hotel and get a little familiar with the layout. Then, a cup of tea and a snack could be nice. However, more importantly, this is just a free time to unwind after your flight. Use these few moments of settling to contemplate the great adventure lying ahead. You are going to be exploring a new place and having experiences you have never known. Today is the day to get ready for an adventure. Have a good night's sleep so you are ready for tomorrow. The real adventure has not yet begun!
On the second day of our adventure, we're taking to the skies! We'll be flying from where we're starting to Pokhara, a beautiful city nestled in the hills. From there, it's not a long stay because we're hopping on another plane, heading towards the small town of Jomsom. This is no ordinary plane ride though. The flight to Jomsom is known for being super pretty, with amazing views of mountains and valleys all around. Jomsom itself is like the doorway to a lot of the cool hiking trails up in the mountains. It's a lovely place to start our trek or just to get acclimatized to the height. So, we’ll be enjoying some truly remarkable scenery from the plane as we travel to this interesting little town, it will be a memorable day for sure.
The real adventure starts today! We're finally leaving the starting point and beginning our walk into the beautiful countryside. Get your bags ready as we are about to set off towards Kagbeni with a leg stretch! Taking in the various sights and sounds along the way. The land around us will slowly change as we walk, showing us the nature that makes this place special. We’ll see hills, maybe some trees, and parts of the landscape that feel quite different from where we were yesterday! The walk to Kagbeni isn't a race. It's about soaking in the experience. We can just chill and swap jokes, eat snacks, maybe catch a little nap - whatever might motivate us. As we go toward the village, this cluster of dwellings and things will start to look very different than they had for the last number of days.
So we will start walking more on day four. Walking through the paths and surrounding fields, we will be on our way to a place in the direction of Chele; those trails in which you can enjoy extraordinary views all around are the kinds of routes that we have ahead. The view will be brisk, even for those interested in looking at something that attracts their attention. From one trekking to another, the day will continue ahead with the same old walking and exploring things. We will stick to a normal speed and enjoy the luxury of breathing the cool air outside. Once we are near Chele, things might start getting a little exciting, and it'll still be another great day!
Enjoy the amazing scenery as you trek toward Syangboche. Today, you're heading to a place called Syangboche. It's not just about getting there, though. The path itself is beautiful. Think of big, impressive mountains all around you. Maybe you'll see bright green trees clinging to hillsides, or maybe the rocks will be tall and jagged. As you walk, the views change, so you'll see new things all the time. You might pass little streams trickling down the rocks, or maybe even see some animals like birds or maybe even a furry goat. The air is fresh and feels really good to breathe. The path to Syangboche takes you up and down, but it's not meant to be super hard so you can enjoy all the fantastic things to see. It's a chance to unplug everything and just be in these incredible natural surroundings. So, take your time, enjoy the view, and keep walking to Syangboche! It's going to be great.
Alright, so it's day six of our hike, and we're packing up again to head toward a place called Ghami. We'll be walking for a good part of the day, which means more time to look around at the amazing scenery. The mountains will be all around us, and we'll pass through some lovely valleys or see the hills stretching out far into the distance. We can keep an eye out for any pretty wildflowers or interesting birds along the path. The air should be cold and clear, offering crisp cleansing breaths and witnessing nature's splendor. This walk is not about rushing, but about soaking in every detail. We'll get to Ghami eventually, but it's more about the journey than just the destination. Each little step forward is another moment to appreciate this experience, taking in details and sights we might otherwise miss.
Today, on day seven, we'll be walking to a place called Tsarang. Think of it like a slow adventure, rather than a race. We will notice the small things, perhaps the way the sunlight falls on the ground, the different plants, or maybe a few birds flying overhead. The trails won't be the same all the way, some may go up and some may go down. It will give us a real feel for the area. We'll have time to take it all in, soak up the views, and get the chance to see the stuff you don’t notice if you’re speeding. Tsarang itself is waiting for us, but the journey is just as important. It is all part of the adventure of our trek. This means we should take our time and just enjoy the walk.
It's a special day because the goal is Lo Manthang, often called the "jewel" of Mustang. This place is the old and far-off capital of the Mustang area. Getting there is a big part of the journey. Think of it as an entrance into a secret kingdom. After a long trek, this is the most sought-after destination. A place where modern times have made very little inroads; hence, stepping inward feels like getting into a separate world. The trek, undoubtedly, would be somehow harder, but all those pains will be easily overwritten with happiness and elation as you set foot in Lo Manthang. This day is a real highlight, showing that hard work pays off with a truly special destination.
First, you'll see the royal palace. It's not like the palaces you might see in a big city; it's older and has a lot of history. Then, there are the monasteries. These are peaceful places where people go to pray and learn. You can walk around, maybe see some monks, and feel the quiet calm. But it's not just about seeing things. It's a chance to meet their culture and understand how things are done in Lo Manthang. It's a full day of discovering this special place and the people who call it home.
Day 10 marked a change in direction. Instead of going further up, the plan was to head back down. Your destination: the village of Dhakmar. This means we will be retracing some of our earlier steps, going back down the paths we had climbed a few days before. It is a different experience going downhill. The views seem to change since we had seen them in reverse, and the way the sun hit the landscape is new. We keep a steady pace, mindful of our footing on the sometimes uneven trail. We occasionally stop to take water breaks, enjoying the scenery along the way. The air feels a bit different at this lower elevation, and we will be getting used to how our bodies react during the trek down. The village of Dhakmar slowly comes into view, nestled below, promising a welcome place to rest after a day of walking.
Today is the eleventh day, and it's time to head back a bit. We're going to be walking along the paths again, making our way towards a place called Ghiling. Think of it like retracing our steps through some peaceful countryside. These trails are nice and calm, so we’ll be able to enjoy the quiet surroundings as we walk. We can take our time and look around at the scenery. We’ll likely see some of the same pretty views we enjoyed before, but maybe the light will be different, giving them a fresh look. The trek shouldn't be too hard since we've already covered this ground, so we should have a good day of walking through quiet nature, eventually reaching Ghiling.
Today, we're walking back to Jomsom. It's the end of our big adventure! As we trek along the familiar path, it’s nice to look back on everything we've seen and done. Remember those high mountain views? The little villages we passed through? All the friendly people we met? We’ve gone far and seen a lot. Maybe think about your favorite moment of the trek. What was the best thing that happened? What was the toughest part? It's cool to remember how far you walked and how much you experienced. Soon, we'll reach Jomsom, a place to relax and chill after our long journey. We’ll be getting ready for what’s next, but for now, just enjoy the walk and all the memories.
After a fantastic time wherever you've been, it's time to head back! Day 13 is all about travel. First, you'll hop on a plane and enjoy a calm, easy flight back to Pokhara. Flying is generally a good way to chill out and view the landscape from up there. As soon as you land in Pokhara, you will not linger there much; soon, you will board yet another flight for the next leg of the journey onward to Kathmandu, the capital city. This flight, like the first one, should be pretty smooth. Think of the day as a chance to unwind a little after all the exploring. You can look out the window, maybe read a book, and just enjoy the ride. It's a day focused on getting you safely and comfortably back home, even if you're not quite there yet. It's just about sitting back, relaxing, and letting the planes do the work.
