The best seasons to experience the Upper Dolpo to Shey Gompa Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these periods, The weather is very pleasant and the views of the mountains are very clear, making the walk very beautiful and safe as well as feasible.
During spring, natural sceneries are filled with various types of blooming wildflowers, and rhododendrons, while the weather is warm. The period that contains the highest number of tourists is autumn since the clear sky allows observing the snowy Dhaulagiri, Kanjirowa Himal, and barren land similar to the Tibetan plateau. High passes can be crossed without any problems because the weather is dry.
The journey from Upper Dolpo to Shey Gompa is the toughest trek because of the location, terrain, and high altitude above sea level. This is a trek that should be taken exclusively by those who have a proper execution of physical fitness. The most challenging part of the journey where the traveler will reach elevations up to 5,000m+, Numa La and Baga La are the highest passes lying at 5,190m and 5,170m respectively, is the points at which altitude sickness is prone to occur. It takes 27 days to finish all the trek hours with long trekking hours each day, typically 6–7 hours of walking in challenging terrain. The Shey Gompa monastery is a must-see, a historical heritage in Upper Dolpo. The monument is an ancient Tibetan Buddhist temple and a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists. The sacred mountain, Himal Chuli or Crystal Mountain, is revered by the locals, while the area around Shey Gompa is quite famous for its sacred caves that are still used for ancient rituals.
Upper Dolpo features by rugged, barren landscape with high-altitude deserts, craggy hills, and rocky valleys which are similar to the Tibetan Plateau. The area itself is the home of Phoksundo Lake, an iconic lake that is most noted for its blue color, it is deep and circled by snow-capped mountains and high cliffs.

Let's meet today! At the Kathmandu Airport. Upon your arrival, one of our teams will meet you at the airport terminal and transfer you to the hotels in Kathmandu. After reaching the hotel, you will have a warm welcome where you will be provided with the best accommodation. After some rest, you will have a short meeting and introduction with the guides and other team members who will be joining along with you to Upper Dolpo. In the afternoon, you can go and stroll around nearby areas and get all the equipment ready for the trek. On your preference, you can also enjoy life at Thamel and get back to the hotel for dinner and night.
Now, we will be starting our trek finally. Today, we will enjoy a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. After having breakfast at the hotel, we will wrap up stuff and get ready to check out from the hotel. From the hotel, we will head toward Kathmandu airport in a comfortable and luxurious tourist coach. From the airport, we will catch a flight towards Nepalgunj, which will take us around 1 hour to reach. We will land at Nepalgunj Airport, enjoying the best panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges and Kathmandu Valley. After reaching Nepalgunj, we will head towards the best hotel in Nepalgunj. Being one of the busiest and smallest towns, we will have some rest and a hotel, and after some time, we will start to explore Nepalgunj city in the afternoon time. After spending some time here, at night we will get back to our hotel, enjoy our special traditional Nepal cuisine, and stay overnight.
Today also, we will have another flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal. We will enjoy around a 45-minute flight until we reach Juphal. In the morning, we will have a quick breakfast and get ready to catch the flight. After breakfast, we will get ready and head towards Nepalgunj Airport, from where we will catch the flight. In some time, we will fly towards Juphal, enjoying the lush hill, terraced farms, and beautiful streams from the plane. We can also catch the best view of Mount Dhaulagiri and Mount Annapurna from the flight. After landing at Juphal, we will have our porters available there. We will get ready to move towards Dunai, as we will be staying overnight there. From Juphal, we will start our journey towards Dunai with our guides and porters. We will start our trek on the Upper Dolpo Trek Journey trail, where we will walk along the Bheri rivers. After a walk for 2 to 3 hours, we will reach Dunai, where we will be staying overnight, enjoying the best time with locals.
Finally, today, we will officially start our trek, where we will be trekking from Dunai to Ankhe. Today, we will have a walk for around 6 to 7 hours as this is the little long trek for the very first, so we will start it early. We will have our breakfast at Dunai and start to head towards Ankhe. We will start our trek on the same Upper Dolpo Trail, where we will walk along the Thulo Bheri Valley, where we will have our lunch and have some rest. After some time spent at Thulo Bheri Valley, we will continue our journey and reach Ankhe. Along the way, until we reach Ankhe, we will have the best views of Kagmara Peak, passing and walking through the forest. We will stay in a tented camp here in Ankhe and have a delicious dinner with local ingredients. We will have our overnight stay here.
Finally, we have already made it up to day 5. Today, we will be having a trek from Ankhe to Sulighat, which is quite similar to yesterday's trail. We will make it on the same trail, which will take us to Sulighar in around 5 to 6 hours. After having breakfast at Ankhe, we will head towards Sulighat. Enjoy the peace trail, which goes through the green forest and lots of streams. After frequent hikes and rest, we will finally make it up to Sulighat. This place can make you feel a little more adventurous because, till now, we have embarked up to an elevation of 3,500 meters. In Sulighat, we will have our stay in the tented camp. Today we will wrap up here and stay overnight, enjoying our dinner.
On day 6, we will finally embark up to Phoksundo Lake. We will have breakfast at Sulighat and get ready for the trek towards Phoksundo Lake. We will start our walk towards the western bank of Pungmo Khola. Along the journey, spotting some suspension bridges and stream junctions will add some thrill and make it more enjoyable. After hiking for some hours, we will make up to Palam Settlement. On the way, we will pass some local settlements, where we will have our lunch. From Palam Settlement, we will climb an ups-and-down trek that will take us through the dense forest and land near the bank of Phoksundo Khola. From here, we can also spot Ringomo, but we will continue our journey directly towards Phoksundo Lake and easily up to here in a certain time after passing Phoksundo Khola. Until we reach Phoksundo Lake, it may get night, so we will have our day resting at a tented camp and stay overnight.
Till today, we have quite made our day busy, but today, we will spend our whole day here at Phoksundo Lake resting and exploring. On this day, we will fully spend our time here at Phoksundo Lake capturing photos, creating memories, and doing everything we can do. We will stroll around nearby areas and enjoy the way of life. People here have their unique lifestyle being away from city life. Also, in your preference, you can visit Ringomo village and observe some culture and traditions performed by locals. After spending a whole day strolling and exploring, you will get back to your tent camp, have your dinner, and stay overnight.
Today, on day 08, we will have a trek towards Phoksundo Khola, which goes from the Phoksundo Lake. Your journey begins in the morning after having breakfast, as you will move towards the western coast. Well, the trail is a little unstable and rough, but the journey will add more thrill, so you will enjoy it more than feeling disappointed. The trail goes through the green forest, which is almost sloppy and straight. You won't get any problems at altitude, as it is generally manageable. You will have your lunch somewhere in the middle of the trek this day, as there are fewer settlements on the way. Trekking for some hours, we will keep passing valleys, bridges, and streams until we reach the camp where we will be staying. After reaching Phoksundo Khola after trekking for around 4 to 5 hours, we will have a good day here, enjoying it.
It has almost been 10 days, and we have started this journey. Now, we have made it up to Phoksundo Khola, and today we will embark up to Phoksundo Bhanjynag. After having a sweet breakfast and enjoying the best view of Phoksundo Khola, we will wrap up and get ready to trek. Our route will take us through the northern side of Glacier Valley, and after walking for certain hours, it will take us to the steep gorge, which will give the best panoramic view of Kang La Pass. Not only this, but we can also spot the jaw-dropping views of Chamlang Peak and Peak 7, which are above 6000 meters. From here, after a certain walk, we will stop near our camp, where we will stay overnight.
Today, we will have to climb a little more to get the best view of our journey. After having breakfast at Phoksundo Bhanjyang, we will head towards Kang La Pass. The trail is a little steep, but the panoramic and picturesque views while trekking won't let you feel any difficulty. As you go more upward, the views get better. Keeping the journey continuing, you will cross many bridges, streams, and meadows. You can spot mountain goats, sheep, and somewhere yaks too on your journey. After some more walking, you will finally reach Shey Gompa. After reaching here, you will stay in the teahouse, where you will be provided full accommodation along with great hospitality by the locals. You will be served a special local Nepal cuisine and stay overnight here in Shey Gompa.
Finally, today we will be acclimatizing at Shey Gompa. Being at the elevation of 4,500 meters, we will surely have some thrilling times by exploring the nearby areas. In the morning, we will have our breakfast and start to explore the places in Shey Gompa. As we stroll around nearby areas, we will meet many locals and have some interesting talks with them about their lifestyle and culture. After some time, we will get back and have our lunch. For some time, we will just sit and take a rest. In the daytime, we will go and visit one of the most important monasteries, which was constructed in 1,655 in Shey Gompa. This place has high cultural value, as it is believed that Lord Shakyamuni Buddha has been here and meditated. We can also see his copper statue, which is covered in plated gold. After spending some time at the monastery, we will head towards the east, where we can enjoy some picturesque moments watching Crystal Mountain. In the evening, we will get back to our teahouse and stay overnight, preparing for tomorrow.
On day 12, today, we will head towards Namduna Gaun from Shey Gompa, which will take us around 6 to 7 hours to complete. After having breakfast, we will wrap up and start to trek. Starting from the Shey Gompa, we will walk through Juniper Forest, which goes downhill until we reach Rocky Canyon on the same Upper Dolpo Trekking Trail. Following the path, we will head towards the south, which will take us to Namduna Gaun. After landing at Namduna Gaun, we will move towards our tent camp, where we will be staying overnight today. After having some rest in the evening, we will go and visit Namgung Monastery, which is made up of red stone, and spend some religious time there. For dinner, we will come back to our camp and stay.
Today, we have to make up to Saldang, which goes through Saldang La Pass and may take you 4 to 5 hours. After having breakfast at Namduna Gaun, we will start our trek. From here, we will start to trek towards Saldang La Pass, which is a little rocky terrain but a combo of enjoyment and adventure. After stepping into Saldang La Pass, we will spend some time capturing beautiful memories. Continuing our journey, we will now move towards Saldang, where we will stay today overnight. Sildung has always been famous for being above the Nam Khong Nala on a plateau and one of the largest villages in the lower Dolpo region. After landing at Saldang, we will stay at a teahouse where we will try Nepali as well as special Tibetan cuisine for dinner.
Finally, we make it up to Saldang and have quite a long day trek, so today we will just have a short hike to Yangze Gompa. After having breakfast, we will start to move north until we reach Nagon Khola. After reaching Nagon Khola, we will have some rest and again continue our trek. Today's trail is so easy and can embark on it easily. On the way, we will pass some suspension bridges and go through Marang and Ki Villages. We will also cross the Panzang River, and after some hours of the hike, we will reach the old Bon Po monastery. After spending some time here, we will head towards the east. From here, we will keep walking, enjoying the best time with nature, watching flowing streams, and reaching Yangze Gompa. After reaching Yangze Gompa, we will have a rest at the teahouse, where we will have a delicious Nepali dinner.
Let's make it today up to Sibu. Today, we will have our breakfast early and start to trek. Today, we have to make it up to Sibu in around 6 to 7 hours. You will continue your journey on the Upper Dolpo Trekking Trail. The way to Sibu has two pathways, and we will choose the easiest one. To reach Namdo Hamlet from Saldang, we will continue our journey alongside the river and through the stupas, mani stones, chortens, and terraced fields. From here, we will keep moving until we reach Namdo Monastery. Now from Namdo monastery, we can easily make it up to Sibu and stay there overnight.
On day 16, we will be making our journey towards Jenga La Phedi, which is at an elevation of 4,900 meters and may take us 5 to 6 hours to complete today. We will have our delicious and light breakfast at Sibu and start our trek. We will leave Sibu Village with full of memories in our eyes and move following the Nam Khong Khola. We will have frequent rest and keep walking slowly and steadily. On the journey, we will have our lunch somewhere in the middle of the journey, as there will be only a few teahouses that only provide meals but not staycations. The trail is quiet upstairs and will take us time, so we will reach Jenga La Phedi and stay there overnight.
On day 17, today we will have just a regular trek of 5 to 6 hours to reach Tokyo Gaun. In the morning, we will say goodbye to Jenga La Phedi and follow the trail along with our guides, who will take us today to Tokyo Gaun. After having our breakfast, our journey goes towards Jenga La Pass. After reaching Jenga La Pass, we will spend some breathtaking moments watching the panoramic view of Mount Dhaulagiri. From here, our thrill journey starts on rocky trails, which will take us to Tarap Valley. Our trek has almost come to an end today. In some time we will reach the tea house at Tokyo Gaun and spend our night.
On day 18, we will spend our morning in Tokyo Gaun exploring nearby areas, and after having lunch, we will start our journey towards Dho Tarap. This place will be the final destination before acclimatization, so we will take today up to here. Leaving Tokyo Gaun, we will move towards Inner Dolpo, which looks like a plain valley. From here, we will pass through the marsh, which will give a feeling of walking in a desert in a mountain region. Slowly we will start to spot the settlement area of Dho Tarap, which is surrounded by crooked stone walls and gives you a vibe of the total mountain region. After reaching Dho Tarap, we will continue our journey towards the teahouse, where we will stay overnight, taking a full day of resting as we have an acclimatization day tomorrow.
Finally, the day comes when we can just stay relaxed and explore the Dho Tarap. We will have a good sleep and have our breakfast in the teahouse. We will have some talks with our teams, share our experience, and roam nearby. After having lunch, we will start to explore every corner of Dho Tarap. According to your preference, you can also wear their cultural attire and know about their culture and traditions. You will also get a chance to learn about their top well-known religions, called Chaiba and Bon Po. After spending quite a good day at Dho Tarap, you will also have some talk about their unique lifestyle with the locals. The day will be so pleasant, as you will love the way they are living far away from city life. When it gets night, we will come back to our tea house, have our dinner, and stay overnight.
On day 20, we will start to ascend towards Tarap Khola. After having our breakfast, we will start towards a broad valley, which gets much narrower in the canyon. In the middle of the journey, you will enjoy the view of blue sheep herds on the juniper and wild rose plants. Our journey will be continued on the Lower Dolpo Trek Route, which takes us towards the Tarap Chu River. On the journey, we will cross many rivers, suspension bridges, and lush hills. From here, we will continue our journey, passing some small communities and terraced farms to reach Tarap Khola, where we will have our nightstay. After reaching Tarap Khola, we will stay at a teahouse, enjoying our dinner.
It's been so long, and we have already made it to day 21. Today, we will have our breakfast and start our trek toward Khani Gaun. After everything wraps up, we will start to move, and along the way, we will enjoy the beauty of locals raising their livestock on the lower grassland, which is close to our trail. We will keep continuing our journey full of enjoyment, passing every ravine by jumping from one spot to another, making it look more thrilling and challenging. We may have to walk through the rivers, leaving the mountain region behind today. We will make it up to Khani Gaun. After reaching Khani Gaun, we will stay there in a teahouse and enjoy our meal.
On day 22, you will have your journey towards Tarakot, which may take you 4 hours to embark on. After having your breakfast, you will start to trek and move towards Lalberi Village. Passing Lalberi Village, we will descend towards dense forest and meet a river on the way where we will keep hiking through the gorge. We can also reach Tarakot walking along the edges of the river, where we can also visit Sandul Gompa on the way. After having the trek, we will reach Tarakot, where we will stay overnight.
Today, on day 23, we will have a trek to Tarakot from Dunai. There we will have our breakfast and rest for some time. From there, our journey starts to descend, where we will go towards the southern side of the Bheri River and leave Tarakot. This journey will take us around 4 to 5 hours to reach the destination. On the trek, we will pass through the Bheri river bank, which will take us on a straight trail. After some walking, we will have some ups and downs passing several narrow canyons, suspension bridges, and some small villages. Our journey to Dunai will be finished on the Lower Dolpo Trekking Trail, where we can spot small villages. There we will have our stay in the teahouse, enjoying our meal.
From Dunai, we will get ready to trek toward Juphal, where we will have our nightstay. We will quickly start our walk after having our breakfast. From Dunai, we will leave the small village of Dunai. Now, once you start trekking, you will keep continuing your journey, watching the scenic view of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Annapurna, and other beautiful places. You will pass the Bheri Riverside trail after crossing terraced farms. After a hike of about 2 to 3 hours, you will reach Juphal, where you will have your stay in a tea house, enjoying the traditional Nepal dinner.
Today, on day 26, we will have a scenic flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj. We will have our breakfast and lunch at Juphal, and in the afternoon time, we will fly towards Nepalgunj. As our journey with porters ends here, we will have a warm farewell with them and catch a flight to Nepalgunj from Juphal. After landing at Nepalgunj, we will wait in the terminal for the next flight to Kathmandu, as we will go there today. We will have our lunch at Nepalgunj and wait for the flight. In the afternoon, we will be back in Kathmandu. After reaching Kathmandu, we will come to the hotel on a luxury tourist coach and come back to the hotel. After reaching the hotel, we will have some rest and wrap up everything about the journey we did together. In the evening, we will have a delicious farewell dinner at the hotel and enjoy the moment together. After spending the golden time, we will get back to sleep.
The day comes when we all depart for our destination. You will be dropped off at the airport for your next destination, or you can again travel with us to another destination.
