Overview

The Shivapuri Nagi Gumba Day Hike is an excellent short trek in the Kathmandu Valley that offers a memorable and picturesque experience. This hike is perfect for travelers who want to explore the Himalayan foothills without committing to a long expedition. The journey begins with a 45-minute drive to the Budhanilkantha Temple, a Hindu pilgrimage site that is home to a giant sleeping statue of Vishnu. From there, the hike enters the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, where the trail first follows an easy desert road before climbing steep stone stairs to the Nagi Gumba, a Buddhist monastery on Shivapuri Hill dedicated to nuns. The monastery offers a panoramic view of Kathmandu and the Langtang Himalayas, and the trail continues uphill through oak and rhododendron woodlands, which are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Along the way, hikers will pass by a place called Baghdwar, a tiger-shaped gargoyle and the main source of the holy Bagmati River. The final destination is the Shivapuri Hilltop at an altitude of 2563m, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountain peaks. At the summit, hikers can enjoy a packed lunch while taking in the fresh air and beautiful scenery.

Few important points to keep in mind

  • It is prohibited to bring any items that could potentially cause a fire, such as speakers, knives, matchboxes, and lighters.
  • Additionally, visitors should refrain from making loud noises that could disturb the local wildlife and their habitat.

Itinerary

We will come to your hotel to pick you up at 7:00 AM, as an early start to the day guarantees the best views of the peaks. As the day progresses, the visibility of the peaks decreases, therefore we suggest starting the trip as early as possible to make the most of the experience.

Drive To Budanilkantha(30 minutes drive) :
We will begin our journey by heading to the Budhanilkantha Temple, which is 30 minutes drive from Thamel. We will take a brief walk around the temple and observe the art and culture. After that, we will continue our drive to the Entrance Gate of the National Park which is also known as Panimuhan.

Panimuhan – Nagigumba – Shivapuri ( 6hours hike):
The Shivapuri Hike begins at the entrance of the Shivapuri National Park, located on the Budhanilkantha side. At the checkpoint, hikers will be required to purchase an entrance ticket. The initial part of the trail is an unpaved road that leads to Nagi Gompa, a Buddhist nunnery monastery affiliated with Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling. The hike then continues to the Shivapuri Peak. After a steep ascent through dense woods, hikers will reach a place called Baghdwar, where there is a small waterfall. The trail then leads to the summit, a small flat area where a statue of Shovapuri Baba is kept inside a fenced round shelter, which is the highest point of the hike at 2732m. From here, hikers will have a chance to see the Langtang mountain range during clear weather. After spending some time at the summit and taking a lunch break, hikers will take a different trail to descend and head back to the National Park entrance. The total distance of the hike is approximately 15km and takes about 6 hours.
