Hike To Sidhalek

‘Lower Ganesh Himal Manaslu Trail Promotional Trek’ (18 – 19 Nov, 2023)

On the scheduled day of 18th November 2023, all 20 enthusiastic participants of the “Hike to Sidhalek” gathered at Buddha Mall, Machapokhari at 6:15 AM. Loaded with excitement, we embarked on our journey in a Toyota Hicae, reaching Naubise within an hour. A delightful breakfast awaited us at “Hotel Whitehills,” where we also organized an introduction program to acquaint participants from various sectors.

Our destination was Bungchung, Dhading, the starting point for our 8 km, 4-hour hike to Patle, home to the “Shreeban Nature Camp Resort.” Equipped with enough water and snacks for the hike, we began the uphill trek, marveling at old settlements, typical villages, and the simple, happy lifestyle of the locals. A brief respite at a large Chautari allowed us to rest in the cool shade.

After a 2-hour uphill hike, we were warmly greeted by the majestic Manaslu mountain, offering a view that made us momentarily forget our destination. We continued our journey, passing through lush green forests, picturesque village settlements, and enjoying panoramic views of Manaslu, Ganesh, and Langtang Himal ranges.

At Khirre Bazar, a surprise awaited us in the form of a grand welcome. The president of Sidhalek Rural Municipality, Mr. Parshuram Khatiwada, along with local representatives, welcomed us with Khada (special shawl) and the local ladies in Gurung costumes adorned us with fulmala. The welcome ceremony, with its cultural richness, brought tears of joy to our eyes.

Despite our hunger, the warmth of the welcome made us forget about food. We had breakfast at 8 am, and we didn’t eat anything except water until 4 pm. We were all starving. Lunch, scheduled for 2 PM, was delayed until 4 pm when we indulged in a buffet lunch at Shreeban Nature Camp, Patle. Following lunch, a formal welcome program was organized by local authorities, where I, Rikesh Koirala, the Managing Director of Wandering Trail Adventures Pvt. Ltd, spoke about the “Hike to Sidhalek” and its significance.

The trek was part of the “Lower Ganesh Himal Manaslu Trail Promotional Trek,” a project close to my heart. Having explored the lower Ganesh Himal and Manaslu belt extensively through activities such as mountain biking, hiking, and motorbiking, I aimed to promote tourism in this scenic region. The 6-day trek covers Bungchung Dhading, Darbungfat, Budigandakifant Gorkha, Tanglichowk Gorkha, Manakamana Gorkha, Ghairung Gorkha, concluding at Gorakhkali Temple Gorkha.

While some parts of the trail are covered by bushes due to road access, others require renovation. I took the opportunity during the welcome program to request concerned authorities for trail maintenance.

The local president, Mr. Parshuram Khatiwoda, promised unwavering support for the development of Sidhalek’s tourism. His commitment and energy left us feeling proud and grateful to have him as the president

After the welcome program, a special cultural evening unfolded with folk music and Panchebaja dance, creating a delightful atmosphere. Post a delicious dinner, we retired to our comfortable rooms at 10 PM.

On 19th November 2023, we woke up early and commenced our hike towards Sidhalek Temple. A stop at a viewpoint at 6:15 am treated us to a magnificent sunrise view of Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh, and Langtang ranges, creating a silent awe for 15 minutes. We then proceeded to Sidhalek Temple, returning to our resort for breakfast.

A short hike to Coffee Hill followed, offering mesmerizing views and a tranquil environment. After enjoying a cup of coffee, we hiked back to Shreeban Nature Camp. Post a delicious lunch, we descended to Bungchung, reaching by 4 pm, from where we drove back to Kathmandu.

The “Hike to Sidhalek” concluded, leaving us with unforgettable memories of breathtaking landscapes, warm hospitality, and the shared joy of exploration and camaraderie.
