Overview
The Shivapuri Nagi Gumba Day Hike is an excellent short trek in the Kathmandu Valley that offers a memorable and picturesque experience. This hike is perfect for travelers who want to explore the Himalayan foothills without committing to a long expedition. The journey begins with a 45-minute drive to the Budhanilkantha Temple, a Hindu pilgrimage site that is home to a giant sleeping statue of Vishnu. From there, the hike enters the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, where the trail first follows an easy desert road before climbing steep stone stairs to the Nagi Gumba, a Buddhist monastery on Shivapuri Hill dedicated to nuns. The monastery offers a panoramic view of Kathmandu and the Langtang Himalayas, and the trail continues uphill through oak and rhododendron woodlands, which are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Along the way, hikers will pass by a place called Baghdwar, a tiger-shaped gargoyle and the main source of the holy Bagmati River. The final destination is the Shivapuri Hilltop at an altitude of 2563m, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountain peaks. At the summit, hikers can enjoy a packed lunch while taking in the fresh air and beautiful scenery.
