Overview

Bardia National Park in Nepal is a large wilderness area in the Terai region of the country. It spans over 968 square kilometers of sal forest and grasslands, located near the Geruwa and Karnali Rivers. The peaceful atmosphere of the park, combined with the recent decrease in tourism, creates the opportunity for a serene and potentially solitary experience.

Despite its size, sightings of the park’s estimated 22 Bengal tigers and 100 one-horned rhinos are rare. Other wildlife found in the park includes leopards, hyenas, monkeys, bears, deer, and a variety of bird species, including the endangered Bengal florican and sarus crane. Along the Geruwa River, visitors may also catch a glimpse of gharial and marsh mugger crocodiles, as
well as Gangetic dolphins. However, it&’s important to note that the park’s proximity to Maoist rebel activity means that visiting may not always be safe. Most travelers choose to visit on organized tours, which only run when the army and rebels are at a ceasefire. Nepal is known not only for its trekking opportunities in the Himalayas, but also for its stunning jungle safaris in
national parks like Bardia. The Terai region, with its dense tropical forests, offers a diverse range of wildlife and bird species, making it a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts. In addition to Bardia, Chitwan National Park and Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve are also popular spots for jungle safaris. Activities available in these parks include elephant rides, canoe trips, nature walks, birdwatching, village tours, and cultural shows. The parks are accessible by both road and air, and some travelers even choose to embark on a rafting trip before their safari. Overall, a jungle safari in Bardia National Park is a unique and unforgettable experience.
