Nearly 43% of the land in Nepal is covered in forests, including two UNESCO Natural Heritage Sites, Chitwan National Park and Sagarmatha National Park, which are both protected areas by the government. Chitwan National Park is located in Southern Nepal and was designated as a UNESCO site in 1979.
