Overview

Shukla Phanta Jungle Wildlife Reserve is an incredibly rich and diverse environment, located in the far south-west of Nepal. The park is named after the largest grassland in the area, known as Sukla Phanta, and once the park’s expansion is complete, it will
cover an impressive 305 square kilometers. This park is one of the last remaining habitats for several threatened species, including the hispid hare and the pygmy hog. It is also a stronghold for the endangered swamp deer, or barasingha.

Aside from these rare species, Shukla Phanta is home to a variety of other wildlife, including spotted deer, hog deer, nilgai, wild dogs, jackals, porcupines, and even tigers and wild elephants. The park’s open terrain makes it possible to spot these predators on
the prowl, and the nearby Rani Tal lake attracts a wide variety of bird species, including herons, ducks, storks, kingfishers, and egrets. From a machan (observation deck), visitors can watch the stunning spectacle of thousands of waterfowl and hundreds of
swamp deer gathering at the lake’s edge as the sun sets.

In addition to its rich wildlife, Shukla Phanta Jungle Safari is also an opportunity to learn about the local culture of the Rana Tharu, an ethnic group from the far western Nepal Terai. This community claims Rajput origin and their culture is distinct from other Tharu cultures. A trip to Shukla Phanta is a unique chance to immerse oneself in the wild beauty of the park and to gain a deeper understanding of the people and culture of this fascinating region.
